Article Summary:
Confrontations with Extremists
Widespread armed confrontations took place on Tuesday between groups of extremists holed-up in the Hatat camp, 35km north of Zanzibar, Abyan. Joint police and army forces attacked the camp using heavy artillery and helicopter gunships.
Tribal and community leaders in Yafi’ had previously requested the authorities to put an end to the activities of the extremists, who started their military training in the area 3 months ago with the help of instructors of different nationalities.
A shroud of secrecy is surrounding this army operation, as it seems that the extremists’ mountain positions are well defended and almost impregnable.
