Once upon a time, we in India experienced something similar, I am afraid more fiendish, with regard to press freedom. Somebody said there was an internal emergency. Bold papers reacted by leaving their leader columns blank. But democracy prevailed, yeah, somewhat.

You say you are pessimistic. That is irrational. If the fire is still there in the journalist and the word can denote its meaning, the reporter will not fail. I just can't understand your plea to the international community and the West. Are countries that strangulate the press in places like Iraq going to help you?

The key to survival is in survival itself.
