An awareness campaign was inaugurated last Thursday in the governorate of Hadramout on the dangers of mines. A number of ambassadors, ministers and a large group of people attended the inauguration.
State Minister and Head of the Mine Extraction National Committee General Muhsen Al-Yousifi said in a statement to the Yemen Times that a branch of the executive committee for Mine Extraction has been opened in Hadramot. The branch's responsibilities cover 58 areas in Hardamout and 18 in Al-Mahara where landmines are thought to be. He also said that this inauguration would be a starting point for a large-scale awareness campaign about mines and their dangers.
It is worth mentioning that Yemen has reached an advanced scale in landmine removal and extraction and a good cadre has been efficiently trained in this field especially post the 1994 war. Groups from Yemen would be sent to both Lebanon and Afghanistan in bilateral agreements to aid in extraction landmines in those countries.
