Candidates for the YT Person of the Yeaer 2001 Title [Archives:2001/01/Reportage]

There were tens of other people who were nominated for the YT Person of the Year 2001 title. The five who received the highest ranks are as follows.
Ahmed Jaber Afeef
Ahmed Jaber Afeef is the chairman and founder of the Afeef Cultural Establishment. He is a hard-working individual who does a lot but does not expose himself. He is an unknown soldier fighting for promoting cultural and social activities and principles. His establishment started several pioneer noble missions including the fight against qat, including the publication of the periodical Yemen without Qat. He has also started a policy to honor intellectuals and artists who have given a lot for their field but have not given enough appreciation.
Dr. Abdulkareem Shaiban
Dr. Abdulkareem Shaiban is the Deputy Minister of Public Health and Population for Medical Care. He was the key and main role player in the late successful immunization campaign. People know that he has worked so hard for this campaign because they see the results. The remarkable effort exerted by Shaiban may have caught the attention of many viewers of TV and listeners of Radio. There was a time when he worked day and night to achieve better results in exposing and publicizing the importance of vaccinations. Using his post, he also played a significant role in providing assistance in the form of medicine for patients suffering from kidney failure. With his tireless efforts, he must have saved hundreds or even thousands of lives of children who may have been victimized by diseases.
Fatima Al-Huraibi
Fatima Al-Huraibi is simply one of the most hard working and ambitious members of the newly formed local councils. Being the manager of local council for the Tahrir zone of the Capital Secretariat, there is a common view that she has been working harder than any other male local council member in the capital secretariat. Despite being among the few females in such a post, she has proven that gender difference is not an issue. She had launched cleaning and awareness campaigns, in which she personally participated in for the capital city. She has also been involved in projects of constructing public parks for children and families. Fatima is also an active broadcaster working for the national TV station. She deserves gratitude for her role in presenting Yemeni women in the best way.
Ahmed Al-Kuhlani
The first action done by the new Capital Secretary Ahmed Al-Kuhali after he was appointed a few months ago was reviving all the dead projects in the capital city. He launched an intensive campaign to resume all the projects that have been stalled for any reason, including pavement of roads, removal of illegal market places, cleaning parks, etc. He was faced with tremendous pressure from powerful individuals in order not to carry out his reforms, but he faced them courageously and insisted on fulfilling his duties. Among those challenges is establishing a properly organized modern market to replace the old traditional one.
His action plan also includes providing space for cars to park in the Tahrir area in the heart of the city. Besides his efforts in improving the overall look of the city, he has also been pushing for better coordination with ministries for better civil services.
Al-Kuhlani is also known for his humble attitude and opening his house for the public. Among his good deeds was providing Iftar meals for the poor during the month of Ramadan.
Abdulmalik al-Mualimi
As the newly appointed Minister of Communications, Engineer Abdulmalik Sulaiman Al-Mualimi is known to be an expert in telecommunications. He was the first to impose strict measures to remove bureaucracy in installing telephone lines. He also presented the motto of a telephone line for everyone. His administrative skills in the ministry allowed better efficiency in providing services to the public. Among his courageous steps were removing the crook and inefficient figures that had been at office for tens of years and who had been a source of bureaucracy in the telecommunication establishments. Some people describe Al-Mualimi as a practical person with whom you may disagree, but when he insists on doing something, he does achieve his goal. Of course, what is common between him and other nominees is his modest attitude and open mind.
