I stand corrected! [Archives:2003/694/Letters to the Editor]

Well, these new facts certainly change my thinking.
If the Iraqi people will destroy water plants because they hate the US and are willing to go without water… we will probably lose but they will probably die.
If the Iraqi people will destroy sewage plants because they hate the US and are willing to endure disease…. we will probably lose but they will probably die.
If the Iraqi people will destroy transmission towers and pipelines because they hate the US and are will go without cars and air conditioning… we will probably lose but they will be rather uncomfortable.
If the Iraqi people will destroy hospitals and kill doctors because they hate the US and are willing to allow children and aged to die… we will probably lose but they will be sad.
If the Iraqi people kill police and politicians because they hate the US and are willing to live without law and civility… we will probably lose but a curious thing will happen.
I don't think any of the remaining people will be able to call themselves Muslims after the death of so many innocents.
And at the end of five years, we will pull out, perhaps with an independent nation of 22 million hard working Iraqis, governed by Iraqis, or perhaps a desolate nation of twelve million.
No schools, no power, no economy, no trust, ruled by brigands.
The part I do not understand is the interest non-Iraqis have in seeing this future visited on the Iraqis. Hard and committed they are to see the Iraqis suffer. They seem to know the rage Allah will feel if an Iraqi child smiles, or an Iraqi man goes to work in the morning.
My misunderstanding was rather great. I stand corrected.
