Military personnel protest their retirement [Archives:2002/07/Local News]
Hundreds of Yemeni Military personnel staged demonstration last Wednesday to the Ministry of Defense protesting their retirement.
The protestors said they went to receive their salaries but surprisingly they found themselves among the listed personnel who were retired. Officials at the Ministry of Defense Promised they would check their problem individually and would consider any injustice. President Saleh last November abolished a similar decree of retiring 16.000 military civil servants, most of them are from the southern and eastern governorates. Yemen said it retired over 17,000 employees during 200-2001 and is planning to retire 15,251 civil servants in 2002. This procedure is a part of the economic reform package Yemen started in 1995. There are around 30,000 phantom and repeated names in the government payrolls Yemeni government is trying to correct.
