Poverty Alleviation Initiative [Archives:1998/25/Local News]
As part of the $42 million program of ‘Poverty Alleviation and Employment Generation,’ the Minister of Planning and Development, the Minister of Social Affairs and the resident UNDP representative have signed on Thursday an initiative support document.
“This initiative intends to promote the socio-economic integration of the poor, especially rural women, through the provision of micro-credit and by creating sustainable livelihood opportunities,” said a statement issues by the UNDP in Sanaa.
Five regions in Sanaa, Aden and Taiz were selected for the first phase of implementation of the initiative. ‘Yemen is one of 25 countries selected to pilot this global initiative.’
It is believed that a quarter of the Yemeni population lives below the poverty level.
