Abdulaziz al-Haisami, a commerce student at Sana’a University was shot in the head last week by the University security police.
The accident was triggered when the municipality police raided a street used by peddlers close to the university campus.
Police hurt one of the peddlers. Upon seeing the incident, students interfered to help the peddlers, and threw stones at the police.
Sana’a University police later joined the municipality police and started shooting to disburse the student, resulting in the injury of al-Haisami.
He was admitted to hospital.
Students of the university subsequently gathered in front of the university campus and didn’t leave the scene, until they had assurances that those responsible for the accident would be punished.
Political parties and human rights groups have called for replacing university police with civil guards to avoid such mishaps.
Complaints of police harassment of peddlers take place on a daily basis in all Yemeni cities.
