Workshop for female journalists on human rights [Archives:2002/18/Local News]
The Supreme Nation Committee for Human Rights (SNCHR) organized April 24 at its headquarters the first consultative meeting with female journalists and writers.
At the opening session, Dr. Wahiba Fare, State Minister of Human Rights, noted that the meeting came to reflect the importance of mass media in spreading human rights principles.
This meeting came to follow-up the works of the former workshop on human rights as well as the endorsement of the child rights legislation enacted by the Supreme National Committee for Human Rights in cooperation with members of the freedom committees at the Shura Council and the parliament, she said.
The child rights law to be discussed soon by the parliament represents the genuine political orientation founded by president Ali Abdulah Saleh that advocates human rights in all aspects, she added, stressing that the mass media organizations have instrumental role to play in forming the public opinion.
Yassin al-Massudi, editor-in-chief of the Thawra newspaper, secretary-general of the Yemeni Journalists Syndicate, made a word in which he highlighted the efforts exerted by the SNCHR, pointing out that the media is an ideal way for advocating human rights.
Raja al-Musaabi, chairwoman of the Arab Human Rights Foundation, made a word on behalf of the civil society organizations, placing stress on the importance of the role of journalists in spreading human rights principles. Najiba Hadad, deputy minister of culture for arts & theater sector pointed out that the agreement on human rights has attracted the attention of all people.
Some of the most important recommendations reached by the meeting included: coordinating with the Ministry of Information to prepare programs related to human rights, and supporting radio and television programs pertaining to human rights.
